How to Pan and Create Stereo Width in Logic Pro
Learn how to place sounds in the stereo field and use Logic's tools to create a sense of space and dimension in your mix.
Panning creates a sense of space by placing sounds across the left and right speakers. Proper stereo placement prevents instruments from clashing and makes your mix sound wider and more professional.
Follow these steps
Adjust the Pan knob
Use the Pan knob on each channel strip to move the sound left or right. Keep important elements like Kick, Snare, and Lead Vocals in the center.
Use Stereo Pan for width
For stereo tracks, right-click the Pan knob and select 'Stereo Pan.' This allows you to adjust the width and position of the stereo image independently.
Apply the Haas Effect
Load the 'Sample Delay' plugin on a mono track. Delaying either the left or right side by a few milliseconds creates an instant sense of width.
Check width with Direction Mixer
Use the 'Direction Mixer' plugin on your master or bus tracks to visualize and narrow or widen the overall stereo spread.
Common mistakes
- Panning everything hard left and right, which can lead to a 'hollow' sounding mix in the center.
- Forgetting to check the mix in Mono to ensure no instruments disappear due to phase issues.
