How to Punch In and Use Cycle Recording in Logic Pro
Master the art of seamless re-recording. Learn how to use punch-ins and cycle mode to nail the perfect take every single time.
This guide teaches you how to automatically re-record specific sections of a song. It allows you to focus on performing while Logic handles the starting and stopping.
Follow these steps
Set Autopunch Points
Click the Autopunch icon in the control bar (it looks like two arrows pointing at a line). Drag the red bar in the ruler to mark the exact section you want to replace.
Define the Cycle Range
Drag across the top of the ruler to create a yellow Cycle area. Ensure this starts a few bars before your punch-in point to give yourself a lead-in.
Enable Take Folders Surfaces
In the Record settings, ensure 'Create Take Folder' is selected. This stores every pass you make during the cycle in one organized place.
Perform the Loop
Press 'R' and Logic will loop the section. Perform the part repeatedly; Logic will save every pass as a new take.
Common mistakes
- Setting the punch-in points too tight, leaving no room for the performer to breathe.
- Leaving 'Replace' mode on when you actually want to keep your previous takes.
