How to Set Up a Count-In and Click Track in Logic Pro

Stay in time and get ready to perform. Learn how to customize your metronome and set up a lead-in count before recording begins.

This tutorial shows you how to set up a tempo-synced click and a preparation count. This ensures you start playing exactly on the first beat of the recording.

Follow these steps

  1. Toggle the Metronome

Find the Metronome icon (a triangle) in the top control bar. Click it to turn the click on or off for playback.

  2. Configure Click Behavior

Right-click the Metronome icon or go to Record > Metronome Settings. Ensure 'Click while recording' is checked.

  3. Activate Count-In

Locate the Count-in button (labeled '1234') next to the Metronome. Click it so it turns purple.

  4. Set Count-In Length

Right-click the '1234' button to choose between a 1-bar or 2-bar lead-in. A 1-bar count is usually sufficient for most songs.

Common mistakes

  • Setting the count-in to 2 bars when you only need 1, causing long wait times.
  • Turning off the 'Only during recording' setting and having the click play during your entire mix.
