How to Sidechain Compress in Logic Pro
Learn the classic 'pumping' effect by triggering a compressor on one track using the signal from another, like a kick drum.
Sidechaining allows one instrument to automatically duck the volume of another whenever it plays. This technique is essential for making room for the kick drum in busy electronic or pop mixes.
Follow these steps
Assign the trigger source
Identify your 'trigger' track (usually the Kick) and assign its Output or a Send to an unused Bus.
Open Compressor and locate Sidechain
Open the Compressor on the track you want to 'duck' (usually the Bass). Look for the Sidechain drop-down menu in the top right of the plugin.
Select the input source
In the Sidechain menu, select the Bus or Track that corresponds to your Kick drum. This tells the compressor what to listen to.
Adjust compression settings
Lower the Threshold and increase the Ratio. You should now hear the bass volume drop every time the kick drum plays.
Common mistakes
- Selecting the wrong sidechain source, such as a silent track or the wrong drum.
- Setting the release time too long, which prevents the volume from returning between hits.
